OTHER LIS ORGANIZATIONS
|
- American Library Association Student Chapter (ALAsc) - American Library Association (ALA) is the oldest and largest library association in the world. Our student chapter hosts events for LIS students to learn more about the vast variety of library and information science job opportunities through community service projects, guest lecturers, and networking events, as well as connecting students to the national ALA sponsored conferences and events. For more information email the UH Mānoa chapter.
- Nā Hawaiʻi ʻImi Loa - The mission of Nā Hawaiʻi ʻImi Loa is to service the Hawaiian community, by strengthening the Native Hawaiian presence in the Library and Information Sciences profession, and by building the capacity of the Hawaiian community in Library and Information Sciences practices. We host a variety of events on- and off-campus throughout the year.
- Society of American Archivists Student Chapter (SAAsc) – The SAA’s mission is to serve the educational and informational needs of its members and to provide leadership to ensure the identification, preservation, and use of records of historical value. Our student chapter holds educational brownbags, service programs, and other activities to promote archival awareness and professional education in Hawaiʻi. For more information email the UH Mānoa chapter.
- Special Libraries Association Student Chapter (SLAsc) – The SLA represents members employed by corporations, private companies, government agencies, technical and academic institutions, museums, medical facilities and information management consulting firms. The student chapter provides an opportunity for LIS students at the University of Hawaiʻi who are active, or have an interest, in special librarianship to play an active role in the SLA on both the local and the national level. For more information email the UH Mānoa chapter.
- Diversity Council (Currently Inactive)– The LIS Diversity Council is the student-generated organization of the UHM LIS Program’s Diversity Committee. The Council actualizes the charge of the Committee by identifying and supporting diverse student and faculty needs within the LIS ‘ohana and beyond, within university culture. The Diversity Council supports all other LIS student organizations with planning and attendance of events. The Council also works to provide needed services for LIS students such as its mentoring program, Hui Makamaka.
- Progressive Librarians Guild (Currently Inactive) – Our Chapter of the Progressive Librarians Guild is committed to advocating for social justice in librarianship and empowering the marginalized members of our communities. We hold coffee talks about issues in librarianship and run a student book club. In previous semesters, we have encouraged students to contribute to a dialogue that has led to class discussions in LIS 691 and LIS 610. For more information email the UH Mānoa chapter.
- UH Graduate Student Organization (GSO) – UH GSO membership includes all classified graduate students from each graduate field of study; the GSO assembly is the governing body of the organization. The GSO provides a forum for UH LIS students to air views on policies affecting all graduate students. All programs have both a Representative and an Alternate Rep for GSO.
- LIS Alumni Group - The Alumni Group is comprised of all graduates of the program. All LIS students automatically become members upon graduation. The Group publishes a semi-annual newsletter, maintains a continuing education program and an electronic listserv (mailing list), awards scholarships to students and working librarians continuing their education, sponsors reunions and other social activities, and promotes the general welfare and professional growth of all LIS graduates.
- LIS Students UH Mānoa - This is a closed Facebook Group for all current students and alumni of the UH Mānoa Library and Information Science Program. Feel free to post about events, jobs, opportunities, articles, and other relevant things related to the profession or the program.
